October Workshop - Dark Latitudes: Poetics of Horror

  • Closed

Workshop Description

In this open-form workshop, our work will dare to answer a midnight phone call, peer under the bed, and tiptoe down the basement stairs. We will confront what quickens the pulse: the dread of things seen and unseen, embodied and other, existential and apocalyptic.
This genetitive workshop will be a meditation on the monstrous and the self. Where do we discover ourselves in a dark narrative? Are we the viewer, the victim, or are we holding the knife?

Goals:
Unearth poetic inspiration from horror across mediums
Allow what terrifies and intrigues to shape our work
Engage with specific scenes and themes that captivate us
Write, create, and make through ritual and prompts

Materials: Pen, paper, and any art materials you'd like to work with.

Alexa Chrisbacher

Alexa Chrisbacher writes and roller skates in Denver. Her first book, Unprotected Lexicon (Vegetarian Alcoholic Press 2019), searches for identity in the fracture of spaces and bones, queer history, and inherited/embodied trauma. She earned an MFA from the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University. While her work roams, it often returns to the poetics of movement, text/image, and reimagining ordinary moments.

Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Statement

I am committed to creating a space that not only facilitates creative growth and discovery, but also upholds collective.aporia’s greater vision of ally-ship, co-conspiracy, and co-collaboration. While our overarching workshop goals dwell in the discovery and examination of what frightens us, our time together will be rooted in safety, mutual respect, and the desire for constant learning.

As a white queer femme person, I understand that it is my responsibility to challenge oppressive power structures. In the context of our work together, this means disrupting the hierarchy of facilitator/student through transparency, open communication, and accountability. If you choose to provide feedback, I promise to accept your emotional labor without ego.

My offer to you is workshop as haven: a virtual space to cut, paste, compose, paint, sketch, and scrawl. A place where you can take what serves your work and leave the rest.
